Roosevelt Elementary, nestled in the heart of Houston, Texas, is a paradigm shift in educational infrastructure. Designed by RWS Architects, this 86,000-square-foot marvel seamlessly blends sustainable construction, innovative design, and an uncompromising commitment to providing a safe and modern learning environment for the students.
Project Highlights:
- CM at Risk Bidding Process: Roosevelt Elementary’s inception and realization were through the CM at Risk bidding process. This approach fosters collaboration, ensures risk mitigation, and leads to optimal construction outcomes.
- Continued Operations Amidst Construction: The challenge of constructing a new school on the grounds of the existing Roosevelt Elementary was met with rigorous planning. Ensuring that education was uninterrupted, the existing school continued its operations even as the new structure took shape adjacent to it.
- Two-Story Marvel: Due to site constraints, the decision was made to design the new Roosevelt Elementary as a two-story building. This compact yet comprehensive structure now warmly welcomes students from Pre-K/K through 5th grade.
- Mitigation Pond & Flood Management: Recognizing the importance of flood management, a 3.7 acre-feet off-site mitigation pond was incorporated into the project, offering both a solution for flood management and an educational opportunity about sustainability.
- Phased Completion: While the new school proudly opened its doors in August 2011, the comprehensive vision involved more than just construction. The old structure was systematically demolished, and by April 2012, the area was transformed with new parking facilities, three efficient drop-off and pickup zones, covered play spaces, and expansive play fields.
- LEED Aspirations: Beyond its functional and aesthetic attributes, Roosevelt Elementary is a testament to sustainable construction. The project is currently in the process of seeking LEED certification, emphasizing its dedication to green building practices and environmental responsibility.
With Roosevelt Elementary, Houston Independent School District has set a benchmark for future educational infrastructure projects. It exemplifies how schools can be more than just spaces for learning—they can be symbols of sustainability, community, and forward-thinking design.
